“My father lived daily in light of eternity, always seeking to please the One who enlisted him as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. Before he ever stood in the pulpit, he stood before God. He was a man of prayer. Prayer was his life and his preaching reflected the fact that he had been alone with God.”
It is titled In Light of Eternity: The Life of Leonard Ravenhill
Mack Tomlinson says this about the legacy of Ravenhill:
In Light of Eternity...Ravenhill’s Biography – A Great Book for those seeking God
Few are raving about a wonderful book I just read “In light of Eternity” The Life of Leonard Ravenhill by Mack Tomlinson....truly a masterpiece to be cherished and a goldmine of spiritual gems and inestimable treasures. I have often pondered why we must give much enthused attention to sifting through thinly disguised abominations promoted with clever disputing – literary “pork” harbouring worms that only pollute body and spirit while we shut the window and draw the curtains against fresh air and far more beautiful enlightened views of the jewels of God as found in this well written biography of a believer.
I had heard several of Ravenhill’s messages and thought I knew what to expect...but still was struck at the inspiration of bold truths we hear are passé by today’s spiritual arrivistes. Though only a well told biography you cannot but be strengthened by the timeless verities evidenced in a man who stood for old-fashioned holiness and with his dying breath still proclaimed not just in words but even more in uncommon living example..”It is possible to live a holy life...I did it”... To a generation whose highest morality is “do your best” - this must be revolutionary insight. The book is rich in thoughts about God, words of light, letters of encouragement, poetry, hymns and truths that go to the depth of the soul to bring spiritual beggars out of the dung hill...to set them among princes again, and to make them inherit the throne of glory.
Every young Christian must read this book to hear the different voice of someone who rudely screams in the wilderness that a life of true devotion and full consecration to God is not just feasible but is the expected norm. Len says holiness comes more easily when we live, see and act always “in light of eternity” . It is no wonder that the truths concerning eternity remain today’s most attacked pillars...the real target being the purity of our walk with God. Len was a man who prayed probably more than he did anything else and spoke of many he knew who also prayed – which he called “Life’s highest Calling” every day for hours. He prayed not to be known or successful but for a deep-rooted Revival (God's way) which he believed only God could send.
Leonard Ravenhill was born in Leeds, England. He came to Christ at the age of 15 after the conversion of his father. At the age of 20 while working as a tailor, he answered the call of God to the ministry. He trained for Christian ministry under the saintly influence of Samuel Chadwick at Cliff College in England. Characterized by a deep life of prayer, passionate evangelistic zeal and a powerful preaching gift, his ministry drew traffic-jamming crowds in the British Isles during the 1930’s and 1940’s. His burden for souls took him all over England and different parts of Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. To the Church his message has been one of prophetic piercing repentance but with the vision and hope of genuine revival.
This definitive biography covers his entire life from birth into adulthood, his calling to the ministry, training, and his launch into evangelistic work all over Britain, as well as his American years until his death at the age of eighty-seven in 1994. All these facts and much more are part of Mack’s brand new 600 page biography of Leonard Ravenhill, In Light of Eternity: The Life of Leonard Ravenhill, a chronology of his life and ministry in Britain and the United States.
My father lived daily in light of eternity, always seeking to please the One who enlisted him as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. Before he ever stood in the pulpit, he stood before God. He was a man of prayer. Prayer was his life and his preaching reflected the fact that he had been alone with God.
Leonard Ravenhill has left a tremendous legacy behind for us, but what bothers me is that it seems that he has almost been forgotten. It seems that many pastors today are not even interested in reading about a man like Leonard and are not interested in reading what he wrote or hearing what he preached. Today when I mention his name or his books, its like they stand there puzzled, not knowing who or what I am talking about. We have truly lost someone great in the passing of Leonard Ravenhill.
Leonard Ravenhill is one of the few men I’ve ever known who was a true prophet. I am delighted someone is finally writing this book.
A. W. Tozer
Those who know of Leonard Ravenhill recognize in him the religious specialist, the man sent from God to battle the priests of Baal on their own mountain top, to shame the careless priest at the altar, to face the false prophet, and to warn the people who are being led astray by him. Such a man as this is not an easy companion. He insists on being a Christian all the time and everywhere. That marks him out as different. Why do we have men of such fiery swords as Ravenhill? They are sick inside when they see the children of heaven acting like the sons of earth. To such men as these, the church owes a debt too heavy to pay.
I highly recommend all tapes and books by Leonard Ravenhill. His writing and preaching made a deep impression upon me in my late teens and early twenties. The passion, fire, zeal, truth and conviction which was so manifest in his preaching witnessed powerfully with my my own heart encouraging me in my pursuit for the reality of God. He is one of several men who the Lord has powerfully used in my life and ministry. I have long desired to see a full biography on his life and now rejoice to see that Mack Tomlinson has accomplished such. Although not having read this testimony as yet I do highly recommend it.
